I prefer group classes, because you aren't as exposed to an instructor. However even in groups the instructor is there to correct you and praise you if they are a good teacher.
Of course it depends upon the class, but yes. It holds me more accountable, it's a set amount of time, and you start building comraderie with your classmates. BODA weight loss
I do like classes, but only in small doses. The gym I belong to is a simple (cheap) one so they don't actually offer classes but I signed up to take one through our community college's continuing education program. The idea that I'm taking it for 8 weeks makes it easier to manage AND switches up my routine. (no pun intended)

I do like them. I know I work out harder because I'm very competitive. I want to do just as much as the skinny super fit people :)
